Good Shepard Hospital

The Old North State Medical Foundation was founded on the grounds of Good Shepard Hospital located in historical New Bern - North Carolina.Standing on the shoulders of black pioneers - both former slaves and freed men and women. The Foundation embraced the spirit of commitment and willingness to enhance cultural, enterpreneural, medical, educational, social and progressive strengths that trademarked thousands of slaves, and freed men and women whose talents and sea worthness built one of the most notable Black cities in post Civil War America.

In tribute to Horace James, a Massachusetts chaplin Charged with coordinating medical care , shelter and education for freed slaves, a 30 acre plot of land wa s named James City.Today James City, a predominately African American  neighborhood, continues to bear the original name.

This once regarded Mecca for freed slaves, New Bern NC, remains a center piece in North Carolina History. It's historical prominence includes being the first state Capital of North Carolina and its election of black men  - Benjamin W. Morris and A, W . Stevens to the NC General Assembly.

Behind the Mission

ONSMF has its mission the acquisition and distribution of funds, resources nd training that empowers youth oriented organizations, institutions, public providers and religious  entities  to serve and reduce the needs of predominantly low income, at risk children and youth. Orchestrating actions and securing finance that supports first class education, avoidance of legal system involvement, enterpreneurial skill development , exposure to cultural experience, learning art appreciation , gaderning, leadership skills , family strenthening and valuing and experiencing the rewards of community service are chief foci of the foundation.

Building on the strengths of the robust discussion between youth , community members and law enforcement during day one of the Old North State Medical Society 2015 medical convetion, the energized audience members became  the impetus leading to formation of the foundation.

Today our plans call for our youth members eventually  taking on the leadership role in the ONSMF and eventually leading other youth organizations across North Carolina.
